Craftsman Weather Seal Replacement: The Hutto Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Craftsman-compatible weather seal replacement for most steel and aluminum door series, with typical installed pricing running $150-$280 for standard single-car and double-car widths in Hutto. Most replacements are completed in under an hour, and we carry the common profiles on every truck. You’ll usually spot a failing seal first thing in the morning: a draft across the garage floor, leaves blown in overnight, or a small puddle after rain that has no business being there.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman-branded garage doors were sold through Sears and later through Lowe’s, with manufacturing handled by Clopay, Wayne Dalton, and Amarr at different periods. The weather seal you need depends on which era your door came from.

Pre-2010 doors with the Craftsman logo often used a T-style bottom seal with a 3-inch or 4-inch rubber blade, inserted into a single-channel retainer. Post-2010 models, particularly the ReliaBilt and Benchmark series sold at Lowe’s, shifted to a bulb-style seal with a wider 5-inch to 6-inch profile designed for the double-contact seal common on insulated doors. The gotcha: a 2012 Craftsman 8-foot door might look identical to a 2008 from the outside, but the retainer channel width differs by a quarter-inch. That quarter-inch means the wrong seal either won’t seat or will tear out within a season.

We check three things before pulling a seal from the truck: the retainer channel type (single, double, or bulb-slot), the door width measured at the bottom rail, and whether the original retainer is rusted through. When the retainer is sound, we match OEM-equivalent EPDM rubber rated for UV and temperature cycling. When it’s not, we replace the retainer with a compatible extruded aluminum piece. Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Craftsman.

Signs Your Craftsman Weather Seal Replacement Is Failing

  • Visible cracking or hardening along the bottom edge. Texas sun and Hutto’s freeze-thaw swings between January lows and August 105-degree days bake EPDM rubber until it loses flexibility. Once the surface crazes, the seal can’t compress to fill gaps.
  • Water pooling inside after light rain. A good seal creates a wiper contact across the full door width. When the blade thins or the bulb collapses, water follows the concrete slope right into your garage instead of shedding outside.
  • Light visible under the closed door. This means the seal has pulled away from the retainer or the rubber has compressed permanently and no longer rebounds. In Hutto’s older neighborhoods near downtown, settling slabs make this worse; the seal has to compensate for an uneven floor.
  • Rodent or insect intrusion. A compromised seal leaves gaps as small as a quarter-inch. That’s enough for field mice, scorpions, and the fire ants that are particular to this part of Williamson County.
  • Increased garage temperature in summer. The seal is your thermal boundary. When it fails, your garage becomes a convection oven, and any HVAC ductwork or water heater in that space works harder. We’ve measured 15-degree differences before and after replacement on south-facing doors in Star Ranch.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Weather seal replacement in Hutto runs $150-$280 installed for standard residential doors, with the range driven by three factors: door width (single-car 9-foot versus double-car 16-foot or 18-foot), retainer condition (reuse versus replace), and seal grade (standard EPDM versus heavy-duty reinforced bulb for doors with known floor gaps).

Every quote we give is flat and final. We state the price before the wrench comes out. The work includes removal of the old seal, retainer inspection and cleaning, installation of the new profile, and a closing-cycle test to verify full-width contact. Parts and labor are both covered under our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If the seal doesn’t sit right or a gap shows up, we come back. No paperwork to file, no argument.

Seniors and veterans receive our standing 5% discount. Repairs over $250 qualify for $50 off.

DIY or Call Us?

Weather seal replacement is not a high-tension job, but it is a precision one. An owner can safely check the retainer channel type with a flashlight and ruler, and can measure door width at three points to spot floor unevenness. What goes wrong in DIY: buying a universal seal that doesn’t match the channel, forcing it in and tearing the mounting tabs, or discovering too late that the retainer is rusted and the new seal won’t hold.

We’ve also seen homeowners close the door on a partially installed seal and jam the opener trolley. If your Craftsman door has an older chain-drive opener, that misalignment can stress the rail. We carry the seals, the retainers, and the patience to do it once. Call (512) 643-6990 and we’ll quote it flat.
